Staying with someone whose income is not pure

Question

I was person in difficulty and one of my friend offer me to stay with him till I find the mean to have a place. I know that only Allaah can help me. But I find out some of them people that I stay with are not doing according to the book I mean their income is not clean. What should I do?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

There is no harm in residing with your friend if that does not cause any harm, Inshaa' Allaah. It is also permissible to eat the food of the people with whom you live if their income is mixed from lawful and unlawful earnings. However, it is more appropriate to avoid as much as possible eating their food, and if their income is purely from unlawful earnings then it is not permissible for you to eat their food at all or to benefit from their money unless for a necessity. In case of a necessity, you can benefit from their money only to satisfy to the necessity. When you fulfil your necessity, then it is not permissible to take any more.

Finally, we advise you to admonish those people in a good and soft manner, and with wisdom to stop earning what is forbidden.

Allaah knows best.
