Living among non-Muslims

Question

Nowadays we are leaving in multi national culture. Most of the time we live in a building and we have non-Muslim neighbours. How should we deal with them? Is it allowed to have fair and good relations with them as we have with Muslims? That means sitting with them, socializing with them, playing with them and going on picnic with them. Is it better to not live with them instead we should live in a Muslim environment in Muslim a Muslim populated area or Muslim community which is possible in many non-Muslim countries like India, America and England where there are areas and buildings only Muslims live.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We have already issued a detailed Fatwa: 88293 about the limits of Muslims dealing with non-Muslims and we clarified the dealings that are permissible with them and those which are forbidden, so please refer to it for more benefit.

After reading the above Fatwa, you will discover that it is better to move from your place to another home and environment where many Muslims live as that will enable you to protect your religion and perform your religious rites, like performing the prayers in congregation, and other obligations that are not possible to do or are impossible to do when living with the non-Muslims. Do not consider moving to a non-Muslim country.

Allaah knows best.
