Question

I know that drawing /painting/ people are animals is a Haraam. What about calligraphy which sometimes draws animals /Arabic letters in the form of an animal/and taking pictures with a camera, is it Haraam?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

It is absolutely forbidden to draw images of living beings as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Whoever draws a portrait, Allaah will punish him/her on the Day of Judgement until he infuses life into it, and he/she will not be able to do so." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Therefore, one should avoid doing so and warn other people against it. Arabic calligraphy in the shape of an animate thing is also included in the above narration since it is called a picture.

Therefore, one should avoid drawing pictures of animate things whether that is by calligraphy or normal drawing or else.

Allaah knows best.
