Question
I am a Muslim girl and my sister which is bigger that me a lot she backbites a lot and is twofaced and whenever I tell not to backbites and to act normal she shouts and to and gets angry. Please help me.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
We have already issued a long Fatwa 81748 clarifying the ruling on backbiting which is forbidden and how to treat it, and issued Fatwa 85882 on having a double face.
So a person who committed backbiting and is double-faced is obliged to repent to Allaah before it would be too late.
You should advise your sister with wisdom and in good and soft words, and be steadfast in advising her; remind her with Allaah and His severe Punishment. You have to be patient for the harm that your sister might afflict you with. A person who calls to Allaah, enjoins good and forbids evil is always harmed by people, but he is ordered to be patient over this, as Allaah Says (which means): {By time! Indeed, mankind is in loss. Except those who believe and do righteous deeds and advise each other to truth and advise each other to patience.}[Quran 103:1-3]. First you have to seek the help of your family and then make use of beneficial books and tapes which speak about the seriousness of backbiting and its evil fate. If you and all your family advise her and counsel her, she will soon repent and return to Allaah, Inshaa' Allaah.
Finally, we ask Allaah to enable you, dear questioner, to continue doing righteous deeds, enjoin good and forbid evil.
