Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The criteria in choosing a spouse are religion and good moral conduct. So whoever has these qualities, the woman should accept him as a husband unless he has a disease which prevents from enjoying sex completely such as the penis have been cut off or being impotent or castrated and so forth, or has a disease that prevents from full enjoyment such as insanity or vitiligo or skin diseases and other contagious diseases. In this case there is no harm for her to refuse and she is not sinful for refusing. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 90593.

The disease which you mentioned, Thalassemia, is not a disease for which one may invalidate the marriage contract or refuse a husband. So you should accept this man as a husband but if you do not want to marry him for the reason mentioned then there is no harm on you in refusing him. You are not sinful for refusing and the threat which is mentioned in refusing someone who is religious and has a good moral conduct does not apply to you because human souls are inclined in general to resent someone who has some diseases which normally make people hate him for. Allaah may bless each one of you with a better spouse.

In order to know the harms of this disease and its effects and how to treat it, you may refer to doctors in this regard.

Allaah Knows best.
