A person who only performs the obligatory prayers proposed to marry her

Question

The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said: "If a person whose religion and moral conduct are pleasing asks to marry your daughter, then marry him." A young man proposed to marry me but he knows very little about religion and he only performs the obligatory prayers. Shall I marry him or not?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

It is permissible for you to marry this man since he is a Muslim, even if he commits sins. As regards whether or not you should marry him, the answer is that this is something that depends on many things. It might be that a person better than him would propose to you. This also depends on you, on your age [if you are still young, you may wait and someone better than him could propose to you, but if you are old, then you might not get another chance]. So, you should value the advantages and disadvantages as much as possible and endeavour to perform the Istikhaarah prayer and seek the advice of your pious and righteous relatives.

Allaah Knows best.
