Woman's becoming righteous wipes out her previous sins

Question

I discovered after a year of engagement that my fiancée had an incomplete sexual relationship with a man who personally informed me about the shameful details. She did not deny it when I confronted her with it. Shall I abandon her and risk her going back again to those obscene acts or keep her and continue with her? It should be noted that she loves me too much and she cannot bear separating from me, however, I cannot forget what happened and I imagine that every minute. Nonetheless, I feel deeply sorry and sinful whenever I intend to take the decision to break our relation, what should I do?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

In our view, you should continue in your project of marrying this woman especially that she became attached to you and cannot bear separating from you, as you mentioned. Even if she committed fornication and then repented, it is still permissible for you to marry her, and thus this is more applicable in her case since what she committed did not go as far as fornication. Furthermore, this happened in the past, and now she became righteous, so seek the reward from Allaah by intending to preserve her chastity.

Finally, we hope that you will not consider the whispers of the devil who want to make you unhappy and miserable.

Allaah Knows best.
