Taking loans from churches

Question

Is it permissible to take a loan from a church?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

It is permissible to carry out transactions with disbelievers, whether such transactions are in the form of a loan or a sale. There are many authentic narrations which prove that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, did so. For example he, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, borrowed a weapon from Safwaan ibn Umayyah and that he bought food from a Jew. These incidents indicate the permissibility of dealing with disbelievers through selling, buying and borrowing without any distinction whether it is a personal or public property. However, it is safer for Muslims, especially these days, to avoid those who are in charge of churches and not to deal with them either through taking loans or anything else. This is because they take advantage of such transactions to draw people to their religion. Allaah Says (what means): {Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to avert [people] from the way of Allaah.}[Quran 8:36]

Allaah Knows best.
