Attributing a child to the grandfather's name or the mother's name
Is it compulsary to name a son after the father's name? In india/pakistan, we give the family name to the son and not the father's name. For example, a father named Saajid Mohammed names his son Waajid Mohammed. Mohammed is his father's name while the father's name Saajid is not added to the name. A child may carry his grandfather's name as his surname
Please, can you explain if a child's surname can be his grandfather's first name? In some families,l it is widely practised that both the child and his father have the same surname. For example, if the grandfather is called Bashir, then his son will be Usman Bashir, and Usman's son or daughter will be also be (named) Bashir. Is this allowed in Islam?.. More
