Assalamulaikum W.B Brother, I am a university student suffering from sever bipolar disorder. I am often suicidal and I have no control over my thoughts and emotion. If I was to commit suicide under these circumstances would I go to hell? Since the mentally ill maybe excused due to their situation. Please advice. I look forward to hearing from you. Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is not permissible for a Muslim (male or female) to commit suicide while being conscious about what he/she does. Suicide is a very serious matter and it has very painful consequences; for more benefit, please refer to Fataawa 107193, 84296 and 96097.

We believe that you are not completely mentally sick and this appears from your balanced writing in your question. However, it appears that you are suffering a little bit from obsessive compulsive disorder and this can be treated. First of all, you should seek the help of Allaah and seek refuge in Him from the devil, and perform acts of obedience and supplicate Him, and perform Ruqyah on yourself many times as discussed in Fatwa 88486. Also, you should recite the morning and evening mention of Allaah and avoid committing sins and befriending a bad company, and you should be keen on performing acts of obedience, especially the five obligatory daily prayers.

Besides, you should consult some trustworthy psychologist so that they could help you because there is no illness except that it has a cure.

Allaah Knows best.
