Question

I am a religiously committed man and want to marry and wish my wife observe proper hijab (covering her face and hands) with all non mehrams including my brothers and cousins and uncles but my parents and brothers are not agree with me they think I am extremist. Please guide me what should I do in this case? I don't want to take any step against Sheria.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, may Allaah reward you for being keen on observing what pleases Allaah and refraining from committing what incurs His Wrath.

Hijab is an obligation on a Muslim woman including the face and the hands according to the preponderant opinion of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them; for more benefit, please refer to Fataawa 83033 and 83702.

Moreover, abiding by the teachings of Islam is not a dispraised strictness at all, and your parents –let alone other people –have no right to forbid you from obliging your wife to wear the proper Islamic Hijab. Moreover, you are not obliged to obey them in this regard because obedience is required only in what is permissible.

However, we advise you to be soft and gentle with your parents and other relatives who disagree with you on the above matter, and you should clarify to them that there is religious textual evidence about this matter and it is a matter that pleases the Lord; besides it covers the woman and keeps her chaste.

Furthermore, you should be patient over the harm that you may face in this regard and remember the saying of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ): “Whoever seeks Allaah's pleasure by angering people, Allaah will suffice him against the people, and whoever seeks people's contentment by angering Allaah, Allaah will forsake him and leave his matters for the people."[At-Tirmithi]

Finally, we advise you to be keen on marrying a pious woman who knows her religious matters so that she will help you [in your stand] by her abiding by the Hijab with conviction so that so may face the harm that she might encounter.

Allaah Knows best.
