Celebrating Mother's day and Birthdays

Question

Would celebrating Mother's day and birthdays be considered as a good thing?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Celebrating personal birthdays or those of prophets, scholars, kings and so on; all these are innovated matters about which Allaah did not reveal any text, and are condemned in Islam. The greatest creation ever was the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) yet nothing was ever authentically reported that his birthday was celebrated by the Rightly Guided Caliphs, the companions may Allaah be pleased with them nor the generations who followed may Allaah have mercy upon them.

Celebrating such birthdays were innovated after the virtuous generations by some ignorant people who started imitating the Christians who used to celebrate the (claimed) birthday of 'Eesa (Jesus) may Allaah exalt his mention. The Christians themselves have innovated such a celebration and added it to their religion, because 'Eesa (Jesus) may Allaah exalt his mention never legislated celebrating his birthday. Rather, they innovated such a celebration, and some Muslims imitated them in this practice, and started celebrating the birthday of the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

The Muslims and the non Muslims who celebrate these birthdays are alike in being misguided, because their prophets never legislated for their nations celebrating their birthdays. On the contrary, they commanded them to obey them and follow in their footsteps in the matters of religion.

Celebrating personal birthdays or other days wastes time and money uselessly and participates in promoting a religious innovation and diverts people from practicing the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

Allaah Knows best.
