What children should do if their parents discriminate between them

Question

What to do if parents discriminate their children on basis of talent and habits? one should remain silent or talk to their parents openly?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is an obligation on the parents to be just between their children and it is not permissible for them to favor a child over the other in gifting him/her unless a gift is given to him/her for something that requires favoring him/her due to his/her chronicle illness, being occupied by acquiring knowledge, or having many children and so forth.

On the other hand, the children should be kind and dutiful to their parents at all circumstances, but it is permissible to advise them in a good and soft manner and clarify the truth to them without being harsh or tough with them. In addition to this, one should supplicate for them.

Allaah Knows best.
