Prayers and righteous deeds lead to wearing the Hijab

Question

I am a Muslim woman and live in a foreign country. I feel that my religious observance is greatly stronger than it was in my country. I practice all the rituals of religion such as prayer, fasting and reciting the Quran on a regular basis. Nonetheless, I am not adhering to the Hijaab. What is the Sharee'ah ruling?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Wearing the Hijab is an individual obligation on the Muslim woman. She cannot take it off under any condition according to the texts of the Noble Quran, the Sunnah, and consensus among the scholars. There is absolutely no doubt that adhering to prayer, fasting and reciting the Quran will lead you to adhering to the Hijab, Allaah willing. That is because prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing. Failing to adhere to the Hijab is a great evildoing that exposes one to the Wrath of Allaah Almighty. It also indicates lack of bashfulness, which is one of the noblest qualities that a woman may possess.

We remind you that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said:

There are two types of the people of Hell that I have not seen yet: women who are dressed, yet naked, who incline (from the truth towards mischief) and prompt others to incline [as such], whose heads are like the inclined humps of camels; they would not enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance even though its fragrance can be smelt from such and such a distance. [Muslim]

In another narration, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said:

In the last [age] of my nation there will be men who ride on saddled mounts that are similar to huge camels in size. They will alight at the doors of the mosques. Their women are clothed but naked, on whose heads there are [what appears to be] like the humps of [lean] camels. Curse them for they are cursed. [Ahmad]

Also, remember the saying of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam: "Any woman who wears perfume and passes by a group of people so that they would smell her perfume is an adulteress.” [Abu Daawood, At-Tirmithi, An-Nasaa’i and Ibn Khuzaymah]

Therefore, you should hasten to offer sincere repentance before death overcomes you for no one can bear Hellfire. Indeed, only one dip in Hellfire will cause the person to forget all pleasures that he enjoyed in this World.

Allaah Knows best.
