A menstruating woman having to leave Makkah before completing her 'Umrah

Question

A woman came to Makkah in the state of Ihraam for ‘Umrah. After arriving in Makkah, she started menstruating and her Mahram (guardian) was obliged to travel back to his home land immediately and she does not have any relatives in Makkah. What should she do?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen may Allaah have mercy upon him said: "She should travel with her Mahram and remain in the state of Ihraam, then return after attaining purity. This applies if she is living in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia because it would be easy for her to return and there would be no hardship or official permits and so forth. However, if she is not living in the kingdom and it would be difficult for her to return, she should apply a sanitary towel, perform Tawaaf and Sa‘y then shorten her hair and end her ‘Umrah. This is because her Tawaaf in this case becomes a necessity and dire necessities permit what is normally forbidden."

Allaah Knows best.
