Calling card companies selling false minutes to their customers

Question

SALAMUN ALEIKUM. We are group of young men who prectice islam and have established telecome service in which we sell prepid and post paid calling cards. We have delicered very good service and reliable, stable and guaranteed minutes with no hiiden costs, no maintanance fee and connection fee. But there is a major problem that wea re faicing and without a concrete answer we have to stop all the service as we will not get any profit and will loose both time and money. The problem is that ther is huge competition about the calling cards companies and the minutes in which they annaounce is not correct if i give you an example, they will publish that this calling card is 10 dollars and you can call to sauidi rabia for 3 hours, but actually this person will only talk 1 and half hour and he thinks that he has telked 3 hours. I think you got the picture this is how they sell the calling cards and unfurtunately most of the people do know that this companies is not telling the truth and they are still buyin that false minutes. So my question is. Can we participate this market and make profit using the same fale minutes? If the people know about this can we sell false minutes? This is very importnt for us as most of the companies are non muslims and they will only profit from yhe market and we willl loose all the money and the system we have bought. We really need to get halal money and not haram that is why we are asking this fatwa. Hope to hear from you very soon SALAAMUN CALAYUM

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is not permissible for you to cheat people or consume their money unjustly as a way of imitating those who do so in order to compete with them and the like.

Not gaining a profit is not a sound reason for consuming people’s money without right by selling false minutes. Islam prohibited cheating and deceiving and threatened the trader if he lies and cheats to destroy the blessing of his sale.

Indeed, there are many permissible means for attracting the customers without cheating, deceiving or lying. So, fear Allaah, do not tread forbidden paths and do not wrong people by consuming their money without right.

Allaah Knows best.
