Permissible and prohibited cases of separation between a father and his son

Question

What is the ruling on trying to separate a father and his son?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Separation between a father and his son may be grouped under one of the following three cases:

1- If one of them is not a Muslim and it is feared that the Muslim may apostatize under the influence of the non-Muslim. In such a case, separation is obligatory, but the son must be kind to his father.

2- If one of them is a proponent of religious innovations or deviant ideologies. Separation in such a case is obligatory, but the son must also be kind to his father.

3- If the father and the son are righteous Muslims and the one who attempts to separate them does so for worldly benefits rather than reasons approved by the Sharee‘ah (Islamic law), then such a person is in great danger, because Allaah The Exalted Says (what means): {and Fitnah (trial) is worse than killing.} [Quran 2:191]

In addition, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “No instigator of strife shall enter Paradise.” In another narration: “No talebearer shall enter Paradise.”

This behavior is considered tale-bearing which is prohibited and a grave major sin. We ask Allaah The Almighty to protect us against such evils.

Allaah Knows best.
