His wife refuses to pray with him at home

Question

Problems in our marriage has led to my wife refusing to participate in our salaah/prayer so we pray separately, what is the significance of her actions?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Your wife's act which you referred to in the question may mean that she is not pleased with you. What is important is that you should know that in principle a man is required to pray in the mosque with the congregation as we clarified in Fatwa 82264. Therefore, you should endeavor to perform the prayer in the mosque with the congregation; and both you and your wife should have reasonable marital relationship, Allaah Says (what means): {And live with them in kindness.} [Quran 4:19] Allaah also Says (what means): {And due to them [i.e. the wives] is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable.} [Quran 2:228]

Also, it is confirmed that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: ''The best amongst you are the best to their wives...” [At-Tirmithi] He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) also said about the husbands who do not have good marital relationships with their wives: ''….Those are not the best amongst you.” [Ibn Maajah]. Besides, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said to a female Companion: "Do you have a husband?” She replied: "Yes." He inquired: "How do you treat him?” She replied: "I try to fulfill all his rights upon me unless I am unable to do so." Thereupon, he said: "Look to how you are with respect to him, for he is your Paradise and your hell (i.e. you will be admitted to Paradise or thrown into hell according to the way you treat him)." [Ahmad]

So, both of you should ponder on these texts and endeavor to end the dissension between you, as dissension is evil and it could undermine the structure of the family and demolish it.

Allaah Knows best.
