Meaning of the two treasures: the red and the white

Question

It was narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Verily, Allaah Has Drawn the ends of the earth near one another for me so that I saw its Eastern and its Western ends, and the dominion of my Ummah will reach (as far as) as these two ends. I have been given the two treasures; the red and the white, and I beseeched my Lord for my Ummah that He May not Destroy it by a widespread famine nor Let it be subdued by an enemy who is not from amongst them who would violate their honor and usurp their wealth. And then verily, my Lord said: "O Muhammad! When I Issue a decree, it is not withdrawn, and I Have Granted your Ummah that I Will not Destroy it by a widespread famine nor Will I Let it be subdued by an enemy who is not from amongst them who would violate their honor and usurp their wealth, even if people from all over the earth unite against them. However, (it will be from amongst themselves) that some of them will kill others and some will take others as captives." What is meant by the two treasures, the red and the white?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Imaam An-Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him said commenting on this Hadeeth: “Scholars said that what is meant by the two treasures is the gold and silver referring to the two treasures of Kisra and Caesar; the kings of Iraq and Ash-Shaam. This also indicates that the kingdom of the Islamic Ummah will extend greatly to the East and the West and this has already happened; as for its extending to the North and the South, it will be less in comparison to that of the East. Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon His truthful Messenger who does not speak from his own inclination. It is a revelation revealed. [Excerpted from the commentary of Imaam An-Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him in Saheeh Muslim]

Allaah Knows best.
