Marrying Someone She Does Not Love Out of Pity to Him and Obedience to Parents

Question

Assalamu alaikum Sheikh. There is a man I do not love, should I marry him out of pity or obedience to parents?Thank you Sheikh

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If you do not want or like this man, then you are not Islamically obliged to marry him as a way of compassion to him or obedience to your parents.

Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him said in Al-Fataawa Al-Kubra:

Parents do not have the right to force their children to marry someone they do not like. If they reject their proposal, they are not considered disobedient. It is like forcing them to eat what they dislike.” [End of quote]

Nonetheless, if this man is righteous in his religion and character, and you accept to marry him as a way of dutifulness to your parents, then Allah Almighty may grant blessings in your marriage to him, so the marital bond will endure and there will be good marital relationship between you.

For more benefit that parents do not have the right to force their children to marry someone whom they don’t like, please refer to Fataawa 87750 and 86777.

Also, for more benefit on the limits of obedience to parents, please refer to Fataawa 271255, 131695, and 123554.

Allah knows best.
