Signs of Purity from Menses

Question

Hello I have a question regarding menses being over. So I don't get white discharge and I check to see my purity by inserting tissue inside. When I go to do this it comes out dry sometimes and other times brown. Sometimes I'll check over and over and it is usually dry but when I flex there is brown. Is this regarded as menses or is my purity there?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We have explained in many previous Fataawa that woman’s purification of menses is known with one of two signs: - (1) Al-Qassah Al-Baydhaa’ (i.e. the white discharge) and (2) dryness.

As for Al-Qassah Al-Baydhaa’, it is a white liquid that is discharged after menses. It resembles the water of mortar or the water of dough. As for dryness, it is fulfilled when the woman inserts a piece of cloth or a piece of cotton into her vagina and finds no trace of blood, or yellowish/brownish discharge. That is because woman’s vagina is usually moist.

As such, if you put a piece of cloth or cotton into your vagina and find no wetness (i.e. dry), so you are purified from menses; however, if you do so and find the trace of brownish/yellowish discharge, so you are not purified. Accordingly, do not hasten until you are purified from menses through realizing any of these two signs.
