Working for Company Which Service Banks, Insurance Companies
Fatwa No: 81451

Question

I intend to start working for a company in the computer science field and I could be asked to provide services to clients such as banks or insurance companies. What is the view of Islam for such jobs, i.e. providing service to banks which deal with RIBA or insurance?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The Muslim’s aim should always be the Hereafter. He should prefer the coming life over this worldly life. This life is very short and soon will end. But the real life is the hereafter, which is endless and everlasting. So you know that usury is prohibited in Islam; all companies, banks etc, that are dealing with usury are forbidden in Islam.

Allah Says (what means): {And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.} [Quran 5:2]

Your work with them is real cooperation.

Jaabir may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said “Allah has cursed the one who consumes Riba (i.e. usury or interest), the one who gives it to others, the one who records it and the one who witnesses it (its transaction).” He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) added: “All of them are equal in sin.” [Muslim]

May Allah bless you and provide you with lawful jobs and earnings.

Allah knows best.
