Repentance after committing a sin
Fatwa No: 81467

What is the best way to repent for a sin one has committed?

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. Repentance from all kinds of mistakes, and disobedience or violations of Islamic rules is obligatory on every Muslim. Allah has commanded His slaves to repent sincerely and has made it obligatory. Allah Says (Interpretation of meaning): {O You who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance, Allah loves every one who turns towards Him in repentance. Allah Says (Interpretation of meaning): {Allâh loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves (by taking a bath and cleaning and washing thoroughly their private parts, bodies, for their prayers, etc.}. No doubt, all human beings make mistakes, but the best of them are those who turn to Allah in repentance. Whoever commits a sin, he should multiply the good deeds. And it is commendable to make Wudu and pray two Rak'a and ask for forgiveness of Allah, with regret for what was done in the past and a determination not to return to that sin, and make restitution for victim’s rights, and seek their forgiveness. If these conditions are met, then one's repentance would be considered as sincere. Allah may accept it and forgive all sins, Insha Allah. Allah knows best.
