Staying in Makkah after Completing Hajj

Question

What is the Fatwa on staying at Makkah after completing Hajj? How many days can we stay after Tawaful ifadah? Is it permissible to stay two days more after performing Hajj in order to do extra Tawaf?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There is no harm in staying in Makkah after finishing Hajj. The Muslim can stay in Makkah after Tawaaf Al-Ifaadhah (Farewell Tawaf) as long as he wishes. He can during that period do any supererogatory acts of worship, like Tawaaf or other forms of worship.

But the person performing Hajj should do Tawaaf Al-Ifaadhah just before leaving Makkah. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “People are ordered to make the Tawaaf around the Ka'bah their last rite; the menstruating women were, however, excused from it.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

For more benefit on the Farewell Tawaaf, please refer to Fataawa 125976, 80442, 89179, 89425, and 116118.

Allah knows best.
