Question

Is it true that we are not suppose to tell anyone about a bad dream that we have because it might happen for real?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said in a sound Hadeeth: “The good dream is from Allah. So, if any of you sees what he likes in a dream, he should not tell it to anyone except to whom he loves, and if he sees in a dream what he fears he should spit on his left-hand side three times and seek refuge with Allah from its viciousness and from the evil of Satan, but he should not inform anyone about it at all, and in this case, it will not cause him any harm.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Thus, we state that there should not be any form of distress, especially if one follows the Prophetic guidance.
In addition, we remind the questioner to recite Ayatul-Kursi [Quran 2: 255].

It is reported in a sound Hadeeth that the person who recites this verse at bedtime, no Satan can approach him till morning. There are also some supplications which should be recited at bedtime.

Also, one is advised to perform ablution before going to bed, to recite the last two Soorahs 113 and 114 from the Quran, and the last two verses from Soorah Al-Baqarah [Quran 2]. Also, doing good deeds, reading the Quran, and avoiding what brings Allah's anger can help and protect you.
