Living in Non-Muslim Parents' Home Paid For Through A Mortgage

Question

I live with my parents in their house. My parents are not Muslims and they purchased their house through a mortgage. My father told me that if I get married, my wife and I can live in the basement of this house for free. I thought this was a great offer because my salary is not enough to pay for my own apartment. So, can I get married and live in the basement with my wife?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There is no blame upon you if you live with your non-Muslim parents whose house is purchased with a usury transaction.
But, there should be no abominable actions in the house. Another condition is that he must make sure of his freedom to practice the teachings of Islam.

At the same time, you are to honor your parents, treat them kindly, obey them but in that which is permissible.

Allah Says (what means): {And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents. Unto Me is the final destination. But if they (both) strive with you to make you join in worship with Me others that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not, but behave with them in the world kindly, …} [Quran 31:14-15]

Also, you should invite them to Islam with wisdom and in a good manner.

Allah Says (what means): {Invite (mankind, O Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Quran) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. …} [Quran 16:125]

In the same vein, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Whoever calls to guidance, his reward will be equal to that of those who follow him without their reward being diminished in any respect.” [Muslim]

May Allah grant you success and enable you to do good.

Allah knows best.
