The ruling on saying,

Question

What is the ruling on saying, "This is a good omen…"?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alyhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The Arabs would consider some signs of the zodiac as ominous and others as auspicious, and this is why they would say upon seeing rain, “We have been given rain by virtue of such and such a star."

Contrary to this, a Muslim should thank Allaah The Almighty whenever He bestows any blessing upon him, and attributing grace to Allaah The Exalted is a form of thanking Him.

Consequently, the Muslim should avoid using the expression, “good omen” and it is better for him to say, “It is by the favor and grace of Allaah that we have been given such goodness or such and such blessing has reached us.

Allaah Knows best.
