New Wife Has Problems with Her Husband, In-Laws and Parents

Question

How and in what ways is a newly-married girl supposed to manage her house-hold, while studying and teaching at the same time and having a non-cooperative and non-understanding husband and in-laws or parents?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Allah has legislated marriage and set for it two principles of affection and clemency. Allah Says (what means): {And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.} [Quran 30: 21]

So, both sides (husband and wife) should spare no effort to please each other and to maintain good company.

Each side should then fulfill the rights of the other side and turn a blind eye to his/her shortcomings.

On the other hand, if you stipulated during the marriage contract a condition whereby you will pursue your studies or your work, then it will be unlawful for your in-laws or your husband to prevent you from doing so, without your consent.

But, if you have not stipulated such a condition during the marriage contract, then the husband could hinder you from pursuing your studies without his permission.

We advise you, dear sister, to look for that which is better for your matrimonial life, your home, your husband and children and do it. This could require some sacrifices.

We ask Allah to guide us all to that which pleases Him.

Allah knows best.
