Unwanted Pregnancy as She Has an 8-Month Daughter

Question

My wife has a 2-year-old son and an 8-month daughter. It is difficult for her now to take care of them alone while I work outside the entire day. We live alone in Canada and she has no support. Her period is due today and there are no signs for it. If my wife is pregnant, she will be in a very difficult situation because the first 4 months are very difficult for her health and the 2 kids will have no one to take care of them. We are not sure she is pregnant yet, but can she have a pill that forces the period. We are saying there is no evidence she is pregnant yet and there may be no harm. We only suspect that she may be pregnant. If she is pregnant and keeps the pregnancy, the difficulty for her and the 2 children will be too hard to support.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, be thankful to Allah and be content with whatever Allah has decreed for you. Know that a child is a great blessing of Allah, not a calamity. In fact, many couples spend their whole life wishing for a child and doing their best to have a child, but Allah does not bless them with children.

In addition, we warn you against being influenced by the call to family planning and common practice of those people who live in non-Muslim countries.

Doing so without any legal reason is contrary to the Sharee’ah of Allah and an objection to the wisdom of Allah. Also, it is a sign of opposing the creation of Allah and lack of faith in the Might of Allah that He settles all the matters of His Creation.
However, we advise you to perform the necessary tests to know the facts. If the results prove that the delay of menses is not due to pregnancy, then you may use the pills that bring the period provided there is no harm in using them. Know that using temporary contraceptives that do not cause any harm or violation of the Sharee’ah is permissible; contrarily to exposing private parts, as in the case in fixing loops, etc, which is not permissible. If the tests prove that the delay of the period is due to pregnancy, then using anything that could harm the sperm or cause abortion is not permissible.

The preponderant opinion is that there is no difference whether the abortion is carried out before forty days or after forty days pass.

Finally, if she is pregnant then she should submit herself to the will of Allah and should submit to the rulings of the Sharee’ah and be satisfied with what Allah has decreed.

We advise the husband to take care of his wife, to cooperate with her, to be in her company and encourage her on being patient and satisfied with Allah's Decree.

We ask Allah to help and ease your problem.

Allah knows best.
