Husband Does Not Accept His Wife’s Islamic Dress

Question

My husband does not talk to me and does not accept my Islamic clotheswhat shall I do?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Dear sister, we advise you of the following:

Firstly, be patient with him and advise him in a good way reminding him of Allah and the Day of Judgement; Allah Says (what means): {…but give good tidings to the patient.} [Quran 2: 155]

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Religion is sincere advice." If he does not comply, then he will be punished for his act and you will be rewarded for your good act.

Secondly, supplicate Allah to guide him to the right path. Allah Says (what means): {And your Lord says, “Call upon Me; I will respond to you.”} [Quran 40: 60]

Thirdly, if you have behaved wrongly with him or have neglected some of his rights, you should ask him to forgive you. Allah Says (what means): {Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard.} [Quran 4:34]

Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that a lady came to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! What are the rights of the husband over his wife?” He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) replied: “If it were lawful for anyone to prostrate for someone else [other than Allah], I would have asked the wife to prostrate for her husband when he moves in. This is for the great merits Allah gave him over her.” [Al-Bazar, Al-Haakim, and Al-Bayhaqi]

Besides, Um Salamah narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Any woman who died while her husband is pleased with her, she would enter Paradise.” [At-Tirmithi]

Fourthly, repent to Allah from sins and bad deeds that you had committed in the past. Your husband might have been given a free hand on you because of a sin you committed. Allah Says (what means): {And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much.} [Quran 42: 30]

Fifthly, you may seek the help of his father, mother or friends whom you think he respects and values. These could advise him and recommend him to deal with you kindly and remind him of the ruling of Hijaab that is ordained by Allah for Muslim women. Allah Says (what means): {It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.} [Quran 33: 36]

Sixthly, if all the above matters did not help in convincing him to accept your Islamic dress, then you could ask him for divorce and you should not obey him if he asks you to take off Hijaab, and we are sure that Allah will ease your matters.
Allah Says (what means): {…And whoever fears Allah —He will make for him a way out.} [Quran 65:2]
