Husband deceived her about his background

Question

I wanted to ask what should I do? I have been married for several years and I have found out that my husband has been married before and divorced, also he obtained his freedom in my country by marrying his niece? This has astonished me and I do not know what to do my husband does not know I know but I have proof that this is true. Our marriage is based on a lie, as he stated under Islamic law that he is a man of no divorce nor marriage, only to me. How can I trust and share my life with him now? Advise me. I do not know what to do? I also worry for my children and my parents now know?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. Take things easy. In fact, this matter is simple and there is no problem that could cause you or your children any harm. Don't fear for your future or that of your children. This should not push you to have any doubts about your husband or to lose trust in him. The fact that your husband was married before and is divorced is not a forbidden act and his divorcing his ex-wife is lawful. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) married more than ten women and divorced some of them. Know also that Shariah does not oblige the man to inform any wife of his previous marriages and this has no impact on the validity of the marriage itself even if he writes in the document that he has not been married before. Yes, he lied and he should repent from his lie. So, we advise you to calm down and avoid being too suspicious. Look at your husband's religion and character. If he is religious and of good character and if he fulfills his marital obligations, then you should trust him and consider his previous lie a mistake which he might have committed for some reasons that he knows. May Allah guide us and you to the right path. Allah knows best.
