Lamenting over huge monetary loss

Question

We are unfortunate people who lost a huge sum of money because someone cheated us. The problem is we cannot forget it, and we always feel very depressed. We pray hard but still feel very miserable. Someone told us to take it as fated, meaning good and bad are from Allah. If we always lament on why this must happen, then Allah may give us something worst than this which will overcome the present money problem. How do you explain all this?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

There is no doubt that what has befallen you is predestined and decreed by Allah.

Nothing happens in this world but by the Decree of Allah. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {Verily, We have created all things with Qadar (Divine Preordainments of all things before their creation, as written in the Book of Decrees Al-Lauh Al-Mahfûz).}[54:49]. Allah also Says (interpretation of meaning): {….He has created everything, and has measured it exactly according to its due measurements.}[25:2].

Among the six pillars of Iman is "to believe in the decree (and predestination) of Allah whether it is good or bad." It is reported in Saheeh Bukhari and Muslim that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: The disliked things that happen to a person may be by affliction and by choice in order to be tested by Allah to straighten his truthfulness and belief, and it may be as a punishment for a sin that he committed.

Anyway, a Muslim has to be patient with everything, and he has to thank Allah and Praise Him, a lot.

If he does so, and his sin is forgiven, then Allah will raise his status because of that, and reward him for praising Him and seeking repentance from Him.

Therefore, we advise you to study yourselves and inspect your status of affairs. If you find that you are on righteous deeds and obedience, then consider that what has befallen you is an affliction, so, take care and be cautious, and take the licit measures as not to be cheated another time.

If you find that you are negligent in religious matters, then you have to try to make up for what had happened, repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness, and take heart that Allah will give you better in exchange for your loss.

Allah knows best.
