Says he is trying to be better Muslim but does Haraam things

Question

I am a 16-years-old Muslim who just recently became serious with the religion of Islam about two weeks ago. My past was very bad, and I was looking for someone to try to tell me what I should do to become a better Muslim and follow the right ways of Islam. You see, I had a girlfriend for about 11/2 years, and I have done everything in the past (Haraam things). Then I broke up with her and told her that I feared Allaah and I am becoming more religious. I do not hug or kiss her anymore, although I am talking to as a friend and trying to make her follow the right way. I am also talking to her, to ease the hardship for her. But, then I met a friend who just came to my school and he tried to show me the better ways. So now I am praying 5 times a day and I'm also reading The Noble Qur'aan (Al-Hamdulillah). I also am in Concert Choir and acting in school which I know is Haraam, however, they give me excellent grades in school, and I am just trying to stop all the Haraam things step by step. Is there anything you advise me to do to make my self a better Muslim (Insha Allaah)? I am also telling my friends about Islam and the beauty and truth about Islam to everyone around me. Please help me.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We congratulate you on your repentance and determination to adhere to the Islamic rulings in your day-to-day life. In fact, a Muslim should take the matter of his religion very seriously since he will be held accountable in front of Allaah for his every deed.

Allaah welcomes every repentant regardless of his sins and forgives all his sins if he sincerely repents. For more details read Fatwa: 81467.

We advise you to cut off all your relations with the girl since it leads to much harm and strengthens Satan against you. Islam does not allow you to have any personal relationship with an alien girl (marriageable). For details please read Fatwa: 84281.

Singing and music are not allowed in Islam, so one should not engage in any forbidden act. We mentioned the proofs that prohibits music in our Fatwa: 81545 and 81239.

The idea of giving up Haraam step by step is not acceptable. So, one should trust in Allaah, seek His help, and should give up all sins. Details are discussed in our previous Fataawa: 86436, 85477, 85277 and 84845.

We supplicate Allaah to pour His blessings upon you and make you stead-fast on His True Religion.

Allaah knows best.
