Are the children obliged to obey their mother in renouncing their share of inheritance?

Question

A mother asks her children to renounce their share of inheritance from their father in order to reconcile with their younger sister so that they would please her. So the children are in disarray between pleasing their mother and their share in inheritance in which they have a right to?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The children are not obliged to obey their mother in this, but they are obliged to be kind and dutiful to her, and speak to her nicely. They should endeavour to convince her with wisdom and with good and nice words, or seek the help of whomever they think could influence her.

Nonetheless, if they are content in renouncing their share of inheritance for their sister as a sign of obedience to their mother and seeking to please her, then this is better.

Allaah Knows best.
