Baby milk containing an ingredient which is taken from a woman’s milk

Question

Assalamu Aleikum. My question is about the milk for a baby 5 months old. I found one (brand "Hipp")that contains "lactobacillus" coming from a mother's milk, a mean from an unknown woman. Is it haram?.Thanks in advance.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If it is confirmed that this milk is mixed with an ingredient which is in origin a woman's milk, then it is better to avoid it. Some scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them are of the view that drinking a woman's milk makes one a Mahram to her in any case, (i.e. a person whom one is permanently prohibited from marrying due to suckling, marital, or blood relations) whether this milk is mixed with food, or else, and whether or not the woman's milk is the predominant. In addition to this, not knowing the woman who gave this milk confuses people in knowing who is a Mahram and who is not, as the boy may grow up and marry the daughter of this woman [or a girl who is breastfed by her for a long period of time], and there is great evil in this.

Allaah Knows best.
