Fatwa CenterA husband has no right to punish his wife like this
Question
A husband punished his wife forbidding her to get out of the house unless she reads sourat al baqara, is he allowed to punish her this way ? If she cannot read the whole sourah inspite of her efforts will she have sins ?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad 
is His slave and Messenger.
The husband has no right to punish his wife in the manner which you mentioned in the question and she is neither obliged to carry out this order nor is she sinful if she does not do so. Indeed, the Sharee’ah clarified how a husband should discipline his wife if she is disobedient; for more benefit in this regard, please refer to Fatwa 85402.
Hence, we advise both spouses to have a mutual understanding and be wise in dealing with the problems that might occur between them. Also, knowing and fulfilling the rights of each other helps prevent such problems from taking place in principle.
